WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

When children enter therapy because they have experienced the death of a cared person, they are at a very vulnerable time in their lives. They are often anxious about the therapeutic process and reluctant to talk directly about painful feelings. Activities that are creative and play-based can engage children and help them to express their thoughts and feelings.

Join award-winning author and international speaker Liana Lowenstein, as she equips you with the knowledge and tools needed to work effectively with grieving children, teens, and families.
You will learn up-to-date grief theory, an innovative model for assessing bereaved children, and a variety of creative techniques to help children bereaved by suicide, homicide, mass violence, military casualties, natural disaster, and other types of loss.
Watch the creative interventions come to life through activity demonstrations and videos of actual client sessions, and leave with a toolkit of new and engaging ways of helping children navigate their grief journey.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Explain key concepts such as disenfranchised grief, traumatic grief, prolonged grief disorder, and the dual process of grief.
2. Identify the core tenets of grief informed practice.
3. Describe the key guidelines for explaining death to a child.
4. Implement an innovative model for assessing bereaved children.
5. Apply a variety of innovative activities to help children bereaved by suicide, homicide, mass violence, military casualties, natural disaster, and other types of loss.
6. Utilize play-based techniques to open communication between children and their caregivers.
